ABSTRACT FLORAL PAINTINGS: WILDFLOWERS COLLECTION
These abstract floral paintings began with a drive through the Texas hill country.
Or actually long before that.
My mom used to be a florist. I always loved that fresh smell as I walked into the flower shop.
I loved the beautiful arrangements she would design, and the happy recipients when I would fill in as delivery girl on busy holidays.
So, flowers always make me think of my mom.
She taught me how to clip the ends so they could drink, to remove the bottom leaves so they didn’t dirty the water, and to arrange them in odd numbers.
I’d heard of the beautiful wildflowers in the Texas Hill Country. In April of 2020, I was scheduled to visit our younger son for ‘mom’s weekend’ at the University of Texas (Hook Em’). I planned a mini-vacation through the Texas Hill Country as treat for my flower-loving self while I was in Texas. Well, we all know how that worked out.
It was worth the wait. I knew I had to paint all these flowers. This collection of abstract floral paintings were the result of that long-awaited trip through the Texas Hill Country.
But twelve months later with a fresh perspective, I finally got to see the rolling hills covered with wildflowers.
Purple, white, yellow….dotting the green hillside. Stunning.
“Beautification is far more than a matter of cosmetics. For me, it describes the whole effort to bring the natural world and the man-made world into harmony; to bring order, usefulness — delight — to our whole environment…’
Lady Bird Johnson.
I don’t know much about Ladybird and her politics, but preserving the beauty of native wildflowers was a life-long project. Her comments on wildflowers could apply to other creative endeavors as well.
Beauty and order bring harmony to our lives in a way that might even live in our unconsciousness.
When our environment is peaceful, so are our hearts and minds.
Or at least it can’t hurt.
This new collection of abstract floral paintings is reflective of those wild, free, spectacular fields of gorgeousness.
