5 TIPS FOR SELECTING ART FOR YOUR HOME
First of all, when selecting art, it doesn’t have to match the sofa.
But if you really want it to match, pick out one color you want to use in your room. Select a painting with even just a little of that color. Your furniture or rug will bring out the color in the painting.
Scale. Larger is better. If your budget allows for only a small painting, then buy one small painting you love. Collect others over the years to make a gallery wall. Fill the space. A little white space is good, but a larger painting makes an impact.
Gradually replace your prints or art that you don’t love. Maybe you bought something just to fill the space. Or your taste has changed. If you don’t love it now, take it down; live with plain walls until you find what you love.
Purchase gallery-wrapped art so you don’t have to frame it. Especially if you like a contemporary look. But they also work well to modernize traditional spaces.
If buying a print, splurge on a custom mat or buy in a standard size and add a three-inch mat to allow white space for the eye to rest. The painting becomes the focus if you use a white mat. You can buy inexpensive standard-sized frames at Michaels or Home Goods.
When selecting art, buy something with colors you love, and you can always switch out accessories with the seasons to tie in your painting. I switch out the pillows on my sofa and sometimes my rugs.
Most importantly…
Do you love it? Does it speak to you? Why? Or maybe you don’t know why, but that doesn’t matter.
That’s the best part.
