THE INTERNET killed my sketchbook
Do you have a daily sketching habit? Or carry a sketchbook with you? I used to, back in high school. Well, I didn’t carry one with me, but I sketched all the time. Fast-forward a few years (ok, many years), marriage, house, babies, teenagers, iPad, iPhone, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TripAdvisor, Yelp,Netflix, Hulu. Need I say more? Sad, right? Well, just the technology part, the rest I’m thankful for every day.
I quit daily sketching, but I own tons of blank sketchbooks in various sizes and papers because I always think I will use them again, and like art supplies and planners they are fun to buy.
I used to design and sell invitations and stationery products. This little company was born of my inner ‘back-to-school’ dorky love of school supplies, markers, paper, and any cool organizational tool. If you ever had a Mead Trapper Keeper or owned at least one, or dare I say two of the Classic, Compact, or Monarch Franklin planners, you are ‘my people.’
This love for paper and planning feeds into an annual planning/goal setting session, on paper of course. One of my 2017 goals is to keep a sketchbook again. I considered sharing it on Instagram each day because that’s kind of trendy and creates accountability, but it was too much pressure. So I’m keeping most of to myself for now.
I want to paint a collection of churches or colleges. That involves remembering how to draw. I’m trying to make it part of my daily routine. No eraser. Done in ink. Five, ten minutes or so. Still in my loose style, nothing too tight. Here’s what’s in my sketchbook today… be gentle, I’m a little rusty.
